THREE STYLES WEAVING IKAT, SONGKET, LAU WITIKAU ~ COWRIE SHELLS  

Zenzoey Ikats are individually hand-spun, hand-woven cotton and hand-dyed using natural botanical colors, natural fibers and a blend of traditional and contemporary dyeing techniques. All ikats are woven using a traditional back-strap loom.  All Zenzoey’s Ikats are ethically sourced with a fair price paid to the weavers. At Zenzoey we are passionate about keeping the art of weaving and natural dyeing alive.

  • Sumbanese ikat textile 
  • Ethically sourced and Fair Traded
  • Single panel -  done on a back-strap loom 
  • Black, Wine, Gold
  • Natural Dyes - rust-red from the bark of the kombu (Morinda citrifolia) tree,  blue color comes from the indigo plant, and the colors red, yellow, brown, green and black are produced with various roots and leaves, sometimes mixed together for varying color tones.
  • Three styles of weaving; 1) Lau Witikau ~ Cowrie shells sliced thin with a machete, 2) Traditional ikat, 3) Songket or float weaving 
  • Hand-Crafted, Handwoven on back-strap loom 
  • Takes from 6 months to 2 years to complete each ikat.
